innovation and creativity through music.
Mission:
The Woodbury-Bethlehem Community Music Foundation, Inc. a 501(c)3 public charity, seeks to enhance community consciousness and enthusiasm for music activities and experiences to provide our community (Woodbury/Bethlehem) with valuable life learning and appreciation of music. The Foundation works to achieve these goals by funding programs for the community that foster innovation and creativity in music education and enrichment.
Please consider joining us as a board member. We are always looking for community leaders who care about music!
Accomplishments
2010-11 represented our most ambitious year yet. Our support for string playing in our communities lead to a collaboration with the school district to bring a string teacher on board. This program continues as part of the school day in MES and BES for students in grades 3-5. We helped fund a Young Audience Showcase at Mitchell Elementary School in September of 2010. We offered a May Day Concert at the Bethlehem First Congregational Church. The concert ended with the Maypole Dance. We also again funded a workshop for NHS vocal students with Cynthia Servitas. Most recently, we have assissted the Friends of the Woodbury Senior/Community Center to bring their dream of a concert season for the community to reality. Their first concert, on October2 features a group of musicians lead by Mark Templeton. We also have given several mini-grants to students to advance their music.
2009-10 began with our small grant to the WSO to help fund the Summer Pops Concert. We continue to help fund the WSO and their efforts to bring the symphony to Woodbury each summer. Our partnership with the WSO continues to flourish and we are grateful for their continued support of the Foundation. We are also encouraging local music students to participate in the Greater Waterbury Youth Symphony (see the 'Links' page). We hope to assist student with summer tuition as well as year long participation.
2008-2009 was our most aggressive year trying to promote a string program in the schools. We funded three programs over the past year and a half. Students in second and third grade saw wonderful workshops by Alyce Cognetta-Bertz. While that hasn't worked out as expected, several other doors have opened for us. The Woodbury Park and Recreation department has opened their services in providing space and commitment to lessons for many instruments including violin and viola. We also are currently developing a partnership relationship with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra and are excited to support them in bringing the Symphony to Woodbury.
The Foundation funded its first enrichment program in April of 2006. Region 14's third and fourth grade students were transported to the NHS Auditorium and treated to a Connecticut Opera's production. Since then, the opera company has returned in 2007 and 2008. .
2007-2008 was a very productive year for the Foundation. In addition to the Connecticut Opera performance for 3rd and 4th grade students, high school choral members participated in the CT Opera program "Operatunities." We also presented a String Awareness program to 2nd grade students at Bethlehem Elementary School in May of 2008. We also funded a hands on African Drumming experience for 7th graders at Woodbury Middle School last May. The Foundation also funded an adjudication workshop with Cynthia Servetas for Nonnewaug High School choral students. In addition several mini-grants were awarded to students for summer camp or additional music instruction.
Goals
The Woodbury-Bethlehem Community Music Foundation funds enrichment programs in music at each of the Region 14 schools throughout the academic year. In addition, the Foundation funds Mini-Grants to music students to help defray costs. Students can use these grants to attend a summer music camp, begin private instruction or engage in other activities that promote musical education. Grants are also available to all members of our community to help advance our mission.
