The Foundation celebrated its fourth anniversary this spring. We funded many programs in the public schools this year including our string awareness and string exposure workshops for 2nd and 3rd graders. We also brought to the middle school, the WCSU Opera production of "The Telephone" by Menotti, the WCSU Percussion Ensemble and the African Drumming workshop.
We are pleased to announce a special grant to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra to continue free admission for children 18 and under attending the Summer Pops Concert on July 11, 2009.
The Foundation presented their third summer concert series program of "Music Appreciation" on Wednesday, July 8 at the Woodbury Hollow Park Pavilion. The concert featured many wonderful area musicians including the Valley Chordsmen, The Obarowski Family, NHS Treble Choir under the direction of new Foundation board member, Lynne Kearney and Off The Record. Individuals performing in the program were Jen Swendsen, Matti Kvietkus, Gemma Bauer and Gabrielle Brazauskas. We invite anyone from our communities to contact us if you would like to perform in next year's concert.
This year has proven difficult for many non-profits throughout the country. We are especially saddened of the closing of the Connecticut Opera. They provided a tremendous benefit to the State of Connecticut and will be sorely missed. They delivered countless hours of workshops to children around the state. We hope they can reform when our economy improves.
We have been fortunate to see our funding by local donors and corporate sponsors continued at a level that we have had over the past three years. We are excited about several possible initiatives that are currently under discussion that will help us move our mission to the next level. We want to thank our contributors over the last three years. You have helped make a difference. Also thank you to The Connecticut Community Foundation, The Leever Foundation and The Thomaston Savings Bank for their continued generosity in supporting us and our programs.
